My Burden Is Light

SATB Hymn

Words and music by Craig Petrie

This song portrays Jesus teaching us that life is easiest and we are happiest when we follow His teachings.  This is a simple 4-verse hymn with no separate accompaniment, but it sounds nice performed as-is.  There are two versions available; they have the same lyrics but different music.  The first version is in a minor key mostly, changing to a major sound on the last line.  The second has a more traditional sound, but it may not fit the words as nicely as the first.

Why do ye walk as the oxen must go?
Yoked with a burden of sorrow and woe?
Come rest your shoulder, relief is in sight,
For my yoke is easy, my burden is light.

Many a sinner has shown by his cause,
Wickedness never as happiness was.
Many a sinner, now straightened aright,
Saith my yoke is easy, my burden is light.

Satan desireth ye make him your lord,
Binding with shackle and strong flaxen cord,
Turning away in the depth of your plight,
But my yoke is easy, my burden is light.

Come find the joy serving Christ, your true King.
Come find the peace that His gospel will bring.
Come find the freedom in choosing the right.
Yea, my yoke is easy, my burden is light.
